March 2024 Furtle - Fettle Those Finishes Update

March Review / Furtle

Archie The Wonder Dog

As defined by Mini Archie, ‘Furtling’ means ‘having a rummage, a delve, a look at the contents of something’. So I have furtled around to see what I have been doing this month and now I’m going to furtle around the blogs of anyone else who links up over at Archie the Wonder Dog!

To socialize with my online crafty friends I'm linking up with Mini-Archie, one of my favorite online personalities, and his person for the monthly progress link-up from Fettle Those Finishes!

Continuing weekly stats here for possibly linking up once a month with Kate at Life In Pieces. My 2024 goal is to stitch at least 15-minutes 50% of the days in the year, same as 2021, 2022 and 2023.
  • Week 9: 7 of 7 = 100 %
    • 59 minutes/day average across 7-days
  • Week 10: 6 of 7 = 86 %
    • 54 minutes/day average across 7-days
  • Week 117 of 7 = 100 %
    • 40 minutes/day average across 7-days
  • Week 127 of 7 = 100 %
    • 66 minutes/day average across 7-days
  • Week 137 of 7 = 100 %
    • 67 minutes/day average across 3-days
  • March 30 of 31 = 97 %
  • 2024: 89 of 91 = 98%
March continued to be busy for work and on the weekends. Mr. Hubby Bear and I had some fun celebrating my Birthday month. I tried working on my QuiltFest challenge quilt, but have gotten frustrated with the techniques I thought would work.

Focus continues on my projects planned this year out in my Furtle post HERE.

I am so lucky that I spent at least 15-minutes sewing every day except one in March.

Projects Half Done Progress update:

There were 46 projects already started before January 1, 2024. The below screenshot of my projects from the spreadsheet provided (and a little expanded) by QuiltingGail is my 'official' list with reference numbers used throughout the year.

As of March 31st, 8 projects have been completed (Blue Highlight), 1 UFO and 7 new projects. 4 projects were completed this month (Green Highlight on completion Date), No UFO's and 4 new projects. 5 projects progressed this month (Pink Highlight), 4 UFO's and 1 new projects.

How did sewing go?

March Projects Completed:

1) Mug Mat - At the American Quilter's Society show in Daytona Beach, FL in the swag bag from renewing my membership was an adorable kit by June Tailor Inc made with the AccuQuilt cutting system, Quilt As You Go (QAYG) Twisted Strips Mug Mat. Unfortunately, my kit was missing 2 of the blue fabric strips and I couldn't find a matching fabric in my stash. Instead, I picked out a Purple strip from my stash to replace the blue. I am planning on donating this Mug Mat to the QuiltFest 2024 Silent Auction. This One Monthly Goal was 2024 Project 12 completed in 3-hours and 26-minutes.

2) 2 Halloween Gnomes pillowcases to be donated to one guild for Ryan's Cases for Smiles. 2024 Project 13 was completed in 3-hours and 26-minutes.

3) Honeybees 2024 April Challenge - Quilts of Valor 2024 National Block Drive - Special Ohio Star - One of my guilds has decided to donate blocks to the local Quilts of Valor leader to make into quilts for Veterans. If you want to participate, the pattern is available for free with information on mailing in block(s) HERE.

4) Chair pillow and 2 pillowcases, 2024 Project 16 completed in 3-hours and 40-minutes

March Project Progressed:

1) 2024 QuiltFest Challenge quilt (UFO 3) inspired by the theme "Sew Your Heart Out" using the kit provided fabrics. The applique was too fiddley and the fabric shredded when attempted to sew/quilt so it's back to the drawing board. For reference here's a close-up photo with the fabrics and photocopies of the fabrics cut to the size/shape to audition:

As the Challenge is due for September, I will only share small photos like this one, maybe even just this one for quite some time.

2) Easy Breezy twin size, Quiltville's 2020 Leader/Ender pattern - 50 blocks of the 180 needed for UFO 4 that are kits but no new photos.

3) Alchemy BOM (2024 UFO 6) has more pieces assembled, but no new photos.

4) Smitten2 BOM through Month 9 (2024 UFO 7) had progresses on sewing Block 4C, but not completed.

5) At JAX MQG's March meeting I won a door prize, this time, I picked a quilt kit for Charming Sawtooth (2024 Project 15) fabric squares split into 3 piles and paired for HST's and started to mark sewing lines for the 2 at a time method.

March Stats:

  • 4 Completed
  • 5 Progressed
  • 45 UFO's remaining
  • 10 2024 started projects remaining
What did you get done in February?

  3. This looks like you’re making wonderful progress with all your projects and finishing lots too *waves pompoms* I’m sorry you’ve run into difficulties with the challenge project: does every piece of appliqué have to be stitched down?

    1. Thank you! The thin applique strips were not holding up even when not sewn. I'll execute some other tests.
