Fabric Face Filter instructions

How I make my Fabric Face Filter:

  1. Cut materials/supplies
    1. 9" x 6" Outer fabric (batik or high quality cotton)
    2. 7" x 1.5" Outer fabric for nose wire
    3. For Halter version: Two 4.5" x 1.75" Outer fabric for sides
    4. 9" x 6" Lining fabric (tight weave sheet)
    5. Ties, pick one of the following:
      1. Elastic Over Ears: Two 7" elastics lengths
      2. Lariat: T-shirt 1" stretched and cut to 55"
      3. Ties: Four T-shirt 1" stretched and cut to 17"
  2. Press both short edges of the Nose Wire pocket over 1/4"
  3. Sew one end of the Nose Wire pocket
  4. Sew a single layer of one half of the Nose Wire pocket opening to the Outer fabric
  5. Fold over the rest of the Nose Wire pocket and Sew the long edge and closed edge to the Outer fabric
  6. Put Right-sides together of the Outer fabric (with the Nose Wire pocket) and Lining fabric
  7. For non-halter version:
    1. Sew around edges starting at the bottom, be sure to leave a 2-3" opening for turning the mask
    2. As approaching each corner insert the elastic or Ties at a 45-degree angle. Be sure to keep the elastic flat between corners or leave the tie long ends out the opening
    3. Trim the corners
    4. Turn right sides out
    5. Push the edges out as flat as possible and pull the corners gently with the elastic.
    6. Create 3 pleats and clip/pin in place
    7. Sew 1/4" seam allowance around all 4 sides TWICE
  8. For halter version:
    1. Sew top and bottom long edges, turn and finger press
    2. Top stitch top and bottom long edges
    3. On each side, make 3 pleats and baste less than 1/4" from edge
    4. Fold over top of casings and press
    5. On the front of the mask, lay the casing to start sewing at the folded end
    6. Sew the casing with a 1/4" seam, before reaching the end fold up the extra casing to match the length of the mask, be sure to back stitch at each end
    7. Press the new fold of the casing edge
    8. Turn the casing out and press
    9. Fold the long edge of the casing back in half over itself towards the mask raw edge and press
    10. Lay out lariat and knot both ends
    11. Fold over pressed-folded sides of the casing to be a finished edge, clip/pin in place checking that the lariat still move freely
    12. Sew along the casing edge with back stitching at each end and check each the lariat movement
    13. Top stitch over previous stitching on top and bottom long edges
  9. Wear mask in good health

Reference Information for Masks made by Dawn Kelly AKA DawnyK Designs

The green fabric goes towards the face, it was a high quality sheet. Adjust the wire across the nose to keep the fabric tight to the nose and cheekbones.

For Masks with halter, the loop goes behind the neck and the tie goes higher on the head.

After each mask use, wash the mask. To wash, remove the nose wire and sanitize, i.e. spray with diluted bleach and let sit for at least 1-minute. Launder the mask in hot water with other dirty laundry, be sure to leave the ties in the mask, it will be difficult to put them back later. After drying the mask, gently straighten the wire and push the non-loop end back into the small sleeve. The wire goes in the pocket opening made as a sleeve, between the two layers.

CDC reference for the bleach solution:
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/disinfecting-your-home.html

To make a bleach solution, mix:
  • 5 tablespoons (1/3rd cup) bleach per gallon of water
OR
  • 4 teaspoons bleach per quart of water
While this mask is only two layers and does not have a pocket for any additional filters, you can wear more than one mask at a time to increase layers. Just be sure you are breathing through the fabric and not any gaps on the sides. Also make sure you can breathe adequately for minor movement.
