Easy Breezy Doggie snuggle quilt - 2022 Q1 Finish-A-Long 2nd Finish

On July 1, 2020 Bonnie Hunter added a Leader Ender Challenge to her Quiltville Blog which is now in the Free Patterns section. I started cutting scraps and made several of the larger size blocks. In 2021 when I realized that the 23 year old quilt Kipper, one of my dogs, enjoys snuggling with me under during night TV watching was fraying. The binding outer layer is shredded and the block edges are starting to separate. So I designed a layout with just 9 Easy Breezy blocks. With the boost to my confidence from joining String and Story's Free Motion Quilting Academy with HollyAnne Knight, and making her homemade Spray Baste, the Easy Breezy Doggie quilt finally got sandwiched and was ready to be quilted. This project is the second finish in Q1 of 2022 identified by number 2 on the planning list HERE.

Here's the design in EQ8 .

The best quilting thread match was from a large cone purchased at guild 'ugly auction' where we buy each other's cast off items and the guild keeps a small percentage. After straight line quilting diagonally and outlining the colored squares, the sashing needed some quilting also. Free Motion Quilting Academy has given me so much confidence that I added loopy FMQ in the sashing and learned the wood grain motif to quilt in the outer border. The binding was finished on the front with a decorative machine loopy stitch.

In a charity auction, I won an artist rending my racing whippets (cousins to Greyhounds) on a yard of fabric. Here's Kipper based on photos back when he was a young racer:

Kipper approve this quilt, so it is done and checked off the list!

  2. It’s a beautiful quilt, I love the wood grain quilting along the border - was it as difficult to do as it looks?! Hooray for finishes *waves pompoms*

    1. Thank you so much! It was very easy after training with the online video and practicing lots of doodle pages and then a fat quarter of test stitching. I find that singing a song, usually a Waltz in my head while FMQ works wonders. Thank you so much for the pompoms!!!
