JuLY 2021 Furtle - Fettle Those Finishes Update

 July Review / Furtle

Archie The Wonder Dog

As defined by Mini Archie, ‘Furtling’ means ‘having a rummage, a delve, a look at the contents of something’. So I have furtled around to see what I have been doing this month and now I’m going to furtle around the blogs of anyone else who links up over at Archie the Wonder Dog!

While the FinishALong organized group was cancelled in 2020 Mini-Archie, one of my favorite online personalities, and his person started hosting a monthly progress link-up: Fettle Those Finishes!

July has been HOT! Both AC units needed help so it's been a bit of a strain. I did get to finish the month with a week of staycation. It was so different that I had trouble letting go of the high cortisol lifestyle to relax and rejuvenate with a lot of sewing. In the 9 days off work, I completed 37 hours of cutting, pressing and sewing.

The dogs and I also started Susan Garrett's Home School the Dog online program. I had to be creative to block one dog out without bothering Hubby while working with the other dog. But we did it!

Personally, I'm going through so many changes and it's a little tough. Hubby has been very supportive. I've started a new nutrition program and it's been very different. If you want to know about it check out Dr. Mindy Pelz on YouTube.

Okay dokay, let's see about the sewing!

July Sewing objectives realized and progressed:

1. Almost got the Cheerful Quilt made from Michael Miller fabrics, started in the Quilt Guild in-person class put together. Finally got the borders on by August 2nd. By the end of July 31st, I had the borders sewn and the quilt measured. Just couldn't get them sewn on by the end of the month. Unfortunately, since it was late, I forgot to take a picture of the center without borders. Here's the picture of the twin-sized quilt flimsy with the borders even though that was into August:

2. Finished all 3 sizes of my July blocks for Patterns By Jen's 2021 Color Challenge:

Lil Trixie got her photo with her block:

3. Continued making blocks of Easy Breezy Bonnie Hunter's Quiltville 2020 Leader/Ender Challenge started July 1, 2020. While others quilters are spending quality time getting lots of blocks done, I am strictly sewing the kits when there are no other pieces in my main project(s) to leave under the machine between stitching sessions. I am in no rush and can continue past June 30, 2021 if needed to have enough blocks for a quilt. The blocks are down off the design wall so I am not keeping any count temporarily.

I've learned from looking at Bonnie's finished quilt that I am heading in the right direction with a few tweaks. And I am also adjusting my scrap management to focus on creating the 1.5" versions, moving all other smaller cotton pieces to recycle into pet beds by one of my quilt guilds.

4. For our September Guild Birthday meeting one of the games is a block lottery. For every block made, each member gets a ticket in the drawing. The theme this year is I-Spy at the beach in a Hexagon shape. The side blue triangles are provided for everyone. Made a second block with jellyfish and another fish after the surfer from Heather Ross' Malibu fabric line:

I did not win the lottery, but the blocks looked great together.

5. Got 18 blocks done so far in GnomeAngel's 100days100blocks2021. I'm using Tula Pink fabrics in my stash including recent acquisitions from her Homemade fabric line.

6. Another July project into August to get done was the Quilt Guild Challenge: All About Me. We were to make a quilt highlighting our interests and then the guild members would guess who made which one during the meeting
The quilt is more of squares that represent my history starting at the bottom and moving upwards to current day.

  1. Oh my, what a busy month! 37 hours of sewing in nine days is quite some feat, you’ll have needed time off to recover from your time off! I hope the dog training and diet changes go well and achieve what you hope. I love the two quilt tops and all the blocks you’ve made - I’m hiding this post from Mini Archie for fear he’ll get even stricter and start making me clock in and out of the workroom! Thanks for Furtling!

    1. Since I'm tracking for the 15-minutes/day hosted by Kate of Life in Pieces I use the same phone app (Toggl Track) to track both my work (billable separately to each client's project, I have 3-8 at any one time) and my sewing projects. I'm not as precise with the sewing, but still reasonably accurate. Thank you so much for your kind words. Wishing you the best of luck with your refurbishments and project progress.
